Dear Jim Bob,
You probably won’t like me very much because I’m a Pedophile. I admit it. I am “out of the closet” and I’m taking a stand for my right to choose my own sexual preferences without a lot of people telling me that what I do is immoral or abnormal.
Jim Bob, I just got out of the state penitentiary on a felony related to my sexual preferences. I have paid my debt to society and now the local police where I live have plastered my name and picture all over the internet telling people where I live. People drive by my house all the time and look at me like I’m some kind of pervert. Jim Bob, I think I’m being persecuted.
It’s not my fault that I am a Pedophile! If we’ve learned anything at all from the gay rights people its this: People don’t choose their sexual preferences – they are born that way! If people are born a certain way, their sexual preferences are beyond their control and whatever they do is “natural” and “normal” for those people.
So, Jim Bob answer me this question: What’s the difference between me and some gay person who was just happened to be born with a sexual preference different from me?

Dear Peter,
Not much that I can see.

There might not be much difference between the source of a pedophile’s sexual predilections and those of anyone else’s. But there’s a huge difference between the effects on the other participant to the manifestations of those predilections. A child is harmed by pedophilia. A lesbian isn’t harmed by her sexual acts.
Hmmm. The pedophile isn’t harmed by his actions either – unless going to jail counts. Maybe your point is that you think a woman is not injured by the acts of a lesbian on her. How do you know she isn’t injured?
Good point. A woman who has consensual sexual activity with another woman might be injured. Just as when two people consent to box, one or both might be injured. But the key distinction between pedophilia and is consent. If one woman didn’t consent to the other woman’s sexual acts, that would be rape, and that’s illegal. The legally actionable injury that society generally worries about in sex crimes stems from lack of consent, not from the mere existence of a harm.
